I am agreeing with most of the answers here, the future of Taiwan is not looking good and it is not hard to see why. When Tsai Ing-Wen got elected and DPP controlled the parliament in the latest election, guess what they did first. Instead of calling for unity and creating a better life for all Taiwanese, they focus on taking revenge on the KMT and putting forward policies that benefits DPP supporters and hurts KMT supporter. As if the 23 millions Taiwanese going up against a 1.3 billion China is not challenging enough, DPP sought to divide Taiwan even more.

Taiwan politics is ugly, divisive. Both DPP and KMT focus on the past historical conflicts instead of looking towards future, both party only try to please their base voters, try to win elections, and never give the entire Taiwanese long term future any consideration. Under such political environment, the government officials are increasing bureaucratic, focus only to cover their axx. Tsai government is so good at making empty and impractical political promises. Non-nuclear power, Taiwan Silicon Valley, new Southbound policy, all extremely challenging political dreams with no real capable and experienced practitioners to carry them out.

Comparing the current Taiwan government to the Taiwan government in the 80s, you can clearly see the difference and why Taiwan was able to gain such explosive growth in the 80s but completely stagnated in the last 20 or so years.

Taiwan government back in the 80s focused on growth, focused on the long term fundamentals. Government officials were busy architecting Taiwans future and developing practical and workable economic policies. Today, the focus is on making DPP base voters happy. Government officials are busy preparing answers to the questions by unprofessional and ignorant peoples representatives. Those unprofessional and politically motivated peoples representatives get to dictate Taiwans country policies. What a shame.

While Taiwan is faltering, China is growing the economy, military strength, and diplomatic relationship around the world exponentially. But guess again what Tsai government choose to do in response to Chinas rise. They choose to ignore the 1992 consensus reached by the previous Ma government, again pandering to their base, and cause the two side to practically stop any dialog and exchange. While China is gaining power and influence, Tsai put her head in the sand and choose to disengage China, hoping the problems will all go away.

Taiwan started from a very solid foundation in the 80s, but wasted such great opportunity. Taiwanese focus on infighting, politicking and the result is 20 years of no growth, wasted opportunities. All these Southbound policies, Taiwan Silicon Valley initiatives are too little too late because China and the rest of Asia are all now better positioned to take advantage of the growing Asian markets.

On the other hand, China started with shaky ground in the 80s, but through unity, practical government, and well planned, controlled policy, yes at the expense of freedom and democracy, but necessary in my opinion to manage such big and diverse country, is now rising militarily and economically to the point now it is one of the most powerful nation in the world.

Adding to that the current Taiwan government is not perusing a practical and productive cross-strait dialog and relation, refusing to recognize the importance of Taiwan-China relationship, refusing to admit Taiwans economy dependency on China. With all these issues mostly created by the internal Taiwan politics, there is really little hope for Taiwant future.

I can only hope Taiwanese will realize what a disadvantageous position we are all in, unite, be practically, be sensible, and absolutely stop being political. Or else this downward spiral will only continue.
